Kochi to Chikmagalur: Distance, Route and Travel Time

From Kochi the inland route via Nilambur and Gudalur works well, but many people prefer the coastal NH66 to Mangaluru and then the Charmadi Ghat.

Tranquil Terrain is about 537 km from Kochi by road and the drive takes roughly 10 to 11 hours with breaks. Here is the route we recommend, where to stop and what to keep in mind on the way.

Best road route from Kochi

The easiest way is via Nilambur, Gudalur, Mysuru side, Hassan and Belur.

1. Drive to Nilambur and climb the Nadukani ghat to Gudalur.
2. Continue through the forest stretch towards Gundlupet and the Mysuru side. Note that the Bandipur and Mudumalai forest roads have night travel restrictions.
3. Head north to Hassan via Hunsur or Hole Narasipura.
4. From Hassan go to Belur and then Chikkamagaluru. Take the road towards Hirekolale and Ulluvagilu to the resort.

Google Maps works well right up to our gate. Search for “Tranquil Terrain” and save the location before you leave, since mobile network can drop in a few patches on the estate road.

Another way to drive

Coastal option: NH66 north to Kozhikode, Kannur and Mangaluru, then the Charmadi Ghat to Mudigere. It is longer but avoids the forest road timings.

Where to stop on the way

The forest stretch between Gudalur and Gundlupet is beautiful but it is closed to most traffic at night, so plan to cross it in daylight. Belur temple is on the way and Hassan is a good lunch or tea stop. Many Kerala travellers also come up the coast to Mangaluru and take the Charmadi Ghat instead.

By bus

Direct buses from Kochi to Chikkamagaluru are limited. The easiest plan is an overnight bus to Bengaluru or Mangaluru and then one of the many KSRTC buses from there. Check redBus or the KSRTC website for current options. We can arrange a pick-up from Chikkamagaluru town with advance notice.

By train

The nearest railway station is Chikkamagaluru (CMGR), about 23 km from us. Kadur Junction (around 57 km) and Birur Junction (around 66 km) are on the main Bengaluru to Shivamogga line and have more trains.

From Kochi the usual plan is to take a train to Bengaluru and then either the Chikkamagaluru express from Yesvantpur or a train to Kadur. Check IRCTC for current options.

By air

Three airports work for Tranquil Terrain:

• Mangaluru (IXE): about 160 km, 4 hours via the Charmadi Ghat. Good connections from Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru and the Gulf.
• Shivamogga (RQY): about 95 km, roughly 2 hours. At the time of writing it has direct flights from Bengaluru, Chennai, Goa, Hyderabad and Tirupati. Check airline sites for the latest schedule.
• Bengaluru (BLR): about 285 km, 6 hours. The most flights, from every major city in India.

Driving tips for the last stretch

• The final 20 km from Chikkamagaluru town towards Hirekolale and Ulluvagilu is a narrower road with bends. Take it slow, especially after dark.
• In the monsoon (June to September) expect fog in the evenings. Use low beams and keep the windows slightly open to stop the glass misting up.
• Mobile data can be patchy near the estate. Download the map offline and keep our number handy.
