The Chennakeshava temple at Belur was built in 1117 CE by the Hoysala king Vishnuvardhana. It took over a century to finish and the result is one of the most detailed stone temples in India. In 2023 Belur, along with Halebidu and Somanathapura, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas.

What not to miss
- The madanikas, graceful bracket figures of dancers and musicians on the outer walls.
- The lathe-turned pillars inside, especially the Narasimha pillar.
- Friezes of elephants, lions and horses running in bands around the base.
- The Kappe Chennigaraya temple next to the main shrine.
Tips
Hire one of the licensed guides at the entrance. The stories behind the carvings make a huge difference. Morning light is best for photos. Shoes are left outside, so go before the stone heats up in summer.
