Halebidu was once Dwarasamudra, the capital of the Hoysala kings. The Hoysaleswara temple here was built in the 12th century and has two shrines side by side, each with its own Nandi. Its outer walls are covered with thousands of carved figures from the epics, rows of animals and scenes of daily life.
Getting there
About 55 km from Tranquil Terrain, roughly an hour and 20 minutes. Most people combine it with Belur, 16 km away.
What else to see
- The Kedareshwara temple, a smaller Hoysala temple nearby.
- The Jain basadis a short walk away, with polished black stone pillars.
- The small museum and sculpture garden next to the temple.
Tips
Hire a guide, as the walls tell the Ramayana and Mahabharata in sequence. Carry water and a cap since there is little shade outside.
Questions travellers ask
Which is better, Belur or Halebidu?
Do both if you can. Belur is a living temple with stunning interiors. Halebidu has the more elaborate outer walls.
