Ballalarayana Durga is a hill fort said to have been built by the Hoysala king Veera Ballala. Today only stone walls and gateways remain, scattered over a grassy ridge with sweeping views of the Western Ghats on both sides.

Getting there

Roughly 68 km from Tranquil Terrain, around two hours via Mudigere and Kottigehara. The trek usually starts from Durgadahalli village.

About the trek

  • A moderate trek of a few hours each way through grassland and forest patches.
  • Forest department rules apply and permits may be required. Check the current process before going.
  • Many trekkers combine it with the Bandaje Falls trek, which is a longer, tougher route.

Questions travellers ask

Is Ballalarayana Durga good for beginners?

The basic trek to the fort is manageable for fit beginners. The Bandaje Falls route is harder.
