Monsoon in the Western Ghats is serious rain. Days of steady drizzle, sudden downpours and clouds sitting right on the hills. It is not for everyone, but if you love the sound of rain and a cup of coffee in hand, it is the most atmospheric time to be here.
What it is really like
- Rain can go on for hours, especially in July. There are breaks, often in the mornings.
- Fog rolls in during the evenings and visibility on hill roads drops.
- Waterfalls are full and the landscape is the greenest you will ever see.
- Leeches are everywhere in grass and forest. They are harmless but annoying.
Best things to do
- Sit on your deck and watch the clouds come down the valley.
- Take a shower under the open sky while it rains. Our guests love this.
- Visit Jhari Falls or Hebbe Falls on days when the jeeps are running.
- Drive the Charmadi Ghat in daylight for roadside waterfalls.
- Play table tennis and carrom in the games pavilion.
Roads and safety
Roads to Mullayanagiri and some waterfalls can be closed during red alerts. Ghat roads can have landslips. Drive in daylight, keep extra time in your plans and check with us before heading out. We keep an eye on local updates.
Dealing with leeches
Wear leech socks or long socks over your trousers. Carry a small packet of salt or a leech repellent spray. If one bites, do not pull it, just sprinkle salt and it drops off. Read more in our leech guide.
