Dharwad to Chikmagalur: Distance, Route and Travel Time

Dharwad folks follow the same line as Hubballi. Carry a box of Dharwad pedha for the road, it travels well.

Tranquil Terrain is about 289 km from Dharwad by road and the drive takes roughly 6 to 6.5 hours with breaks. Here is the route we recommend, where to stop and what to keep in mind on the way.

Best road route from Dharwad

The easiest way is via Belagavi, Hubballi, Haveri, Shivamogga and Tarikere.

1. Take NH48 south through Kolhapur and Belagavi to Hubballi.
2. Continue on NH48 past Haveri to Ranebennur, then take the state highway to Shivamogga.
3. From Shivamogga take NH69 to Bhadravati and Tarikere.
4. At Tarikere turn towards Chikkamagaluru, then take the road towards Hirekolale and Ulluvagilu to reach us.

Google Maps works well right up to our gate. Search for “Tranquil Terrain” and save the location before you leave, since mobile network can drop in a few patches on the estate road.

Where to stop on the way

NH48 is a fast highway most of the way with good food courts. Hubballi or Belagavi are the best places to break the journey for a night. On day two, Shivamogga makes a good lunch stop before the last couple of hours into the hills.

By bus

KSRTC and private buses connect Dharwad with Chikkamagaluru. Depending on the day you may get a direct bus or need to change at a nearby hub like Hassan, Kadur, Shivamogga or Mangaluru. Check the KSRTC website or a booking app for current timings. From the Chikkamagaluru bus stand the resort is about 20 km away and we can arrange a pick-up with advance notice.

By train

The nearest railway station is Chikkamagaluru (CMGR), about 23 km from us. Kadur Junction (around 57 km) and Birur Junction (around 66 km) are on the main Bengaluru to Shivamogga line and have more trains.

From Dharwad the usual plan is to take a train to Bengaluru and then either the Chikkamagaluru express from Yesvantpur or a train to Kadur. Check IRCTC for current options.

By air

Three airports work for Tranquil Terrain:

• Mangaluru (IXE): about 160 km, 4 hours via the Charmadi Ghat. Good connections from Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru and the Gulf.
• Shivamogga (RQY): about 95 km, roughly 2 hours. At the time of writing it has direct flights from Bengaluru, Chennai, Goa, Hyderabad and Tirupati. Check airline sites for the latest schedule.
• Bengaluru (BLR): about 285 km, 6 hours. The most flights, from every major city in India.

Driving tips for the last stretch

• The final 20 km from Chikkamagaluru town towards Hirekolale and Ulluvagilu is a narrower road with bends. Take it slow, especially after dark.
• In the monsoon (June to September) expect fog in the evenings. Use low beams and keep the windows slightly open to stop the glass misting up.
• Mobile data can be patchy near the estate. Download the map offline and keep our number handy.
